Further information on your plant
All plants are measured from the bottom of the nursery pot to the tip of the plant and if a height is specified, this is an approximate height, not set in stone. As all plants are living things, they will vary in size throughout the year, and we do our best to give a guide as to the size you can expect. If in doubt drop us an email hello@leafculture.co.uk. And lastly, minor flaws in leaves might be present and will not be covered for compensation. It's worth noting that plants naturally age like people and are rarely perfect.
Alocasia Zebrina is well-known for its distinctive appearance, particularly the zebra-like pattern on its stems, which is quite rare among houseplants and a major reason for its popularity. Note that it's not the same plant as Alocasia tigrina - the leaf shapes are different. The Alocasia zebrina has large arrow shaped leaves that point upwards. The plant exhibits a strong phototropic response, meaning it actively moves its leaves toward light sources. This dynamic behavior is fascinating to observe as the plant adjusts its position to maximize light absorption. Pretty cool heh!
Another interesting aspect of Alocasia zebrina is its dormancy cycle, typically occurring in the winter. During this period, it might shed some leaves and require less water, mirroring its natural growth cycle in tropical climates where a dry season follows the wet season.
Under optimal conditions, Alocasia zebrina can grow quite rapidly. New leaves can unfurl quickly, often showing significant growth within a few weeks so make sure you feed it well and regularly.
Caring for Alocasia zebrina can be a little tricky as the plant's rhizomes are prone to rot if overwatered, so it is essential to keep the soil moist but not soggy and use a well-draining soil mix. The leaves can be sensitive to water spots, so it's best to water the plant at the base and avoid splashing water on the leaves. Additionally, the plant can be sensitive to rapid temperature changes, so it should be kept in a stable environment away from drafts and sudden cold spots.
