Mimosa pudica, commonly known as the sensitive plant, touch-me-not, or shameplant, is a fascinating little species that visibly reacts to touch. When disturbed by fingers, wind, or movement, its fern-like leaves fold inward and droop—a natural defense mechanism called thigmonasty. This dramatic response makes it a favourite among children and plant lovers who enjoy interactive or unusual plants.
Native to Central and South America, Mimosa pudica is a low-growing, creeping plant with fine, feathery foliage and small, round, fluffy pink-purple flowers. It thrives in bright, indirect light, warm temperatures, and consistently moist (but not soggy) soil. Though easy to grow, it can be sensitive to root disturbance, cold drafts, and overwatering. Often grown as a novelty or educational plant, it adds a playful, reactive element to any plant collection.
