If you're after a houseplant that is a bit more exotic, then you might just like Philodendron gigas. With its silky looking velvet like leaves, there's a lot to like about this plant. It's been growing up a small wooden pole and the leaves are elongated with lighter-coloured veins running down the leaves. Depicting the leaf colour is hard - hues of coppery green are most common but possibly hints of purple too.
Philodendron gigas is often confused with Philodendron melanochrysum (and some sellers will list them as the same plant!) and while they are similar, they are genuinely different, Philodendron gigas leaves get much longer and narrow the further up it climbs. For your plant to grow this mature foliage it needs to climb a pole or other support structure.
Philodendron gigas originate from the forests of Panama and Philodendron gigas is found with leaves over 1m in length. The leaves sit very flat to the pole allowing them to absorb as much light as possible. At the time of writing, leaves are about 10cm in length but most are smaller.
Like most Philodendrons, they're easy to grow and provide little demand on the plant parent. Move them as close to the window as possible without giving them direct sunlight which will scorch the leaves. Well-drained soil is important and we recommend Soil Ninja Monstera & Philodendron Soil Mix. Only water when they need it and again, a tool which is really useful is our Leaf Culture Moisture Meter - a must for any plant parent. Try and keep the humidity level up around Philodendron gigas - bearing in mind they originate from the tropics where moisture levels are high (60-70%).
So if you're looking to add a bit more exoticness to your plant collection with a houseplant that has HUGE potential, consider the Philodendron gigas.
Note: the leaves on these plant are rarely perfect - some have minor blemishes and this is how they arrive from the growers. It's not an issue, but just adds to their character and we feel it's better to leave them on the plant to allow it to grow quicker rather than remove them before sending.
My first order with this company couldn't be any better.
