📝 Description

The staghorn fern (Platycerium) is a unique and eye-catching houseplant, prized for its dramatic fronds that resemble antlers. It has two distinct types of fronds: the shield fronds and the fertile fronds. The shield fronds are flat, rounded, and grow close to the base, turning brown as they mature. While they may look dead, they’re actually protective, covering the roots and helping to trap organic matter for nutrients. Above them grow the fertile fronds – long, arching, antler-like leaves that can reach impressive sizes and give the plant its name. These fertile fronds are covered in a soft, furry layer of tiny hairs (trichomes), which give them a silvery appearance and help absorb moisture and nutrients from the air.

In the home, staghorn ferns thrive in bright, indirect light with good airflow and moderate humidity. They’re often mounted on wood or grown in hanging baskets, as their roots are naturally adapted to clinging onto trees rather than sitting in soil. Watering is best done by soaking the root ball or mount when it feels dry, then letting it drain fully.

Pro Tip: It’s important not to wipe or wash the fuzzy coating from the fronds, as this protective layer is vital for the plant’s health. With the right care, the combination of brown, shield-like base fronds and sculptural, antler-like leaves with their silvery, velvety finish makes this fern both unusual and striking—a living piece of natural art.
