Further information on your plant

All plants are measured from the bottom of the nursery pot to the tip of the plant and if a height is specified, this is an approximate height, not set in stone. As all plants are living things, they will vary in size throughout the year, and we do our best to give a guide as to the size you can expect. If in doubt drop us an email hello@leafculture.co.uk. And lastly, minor flaws in leaves might be present and will not be covered for compensation. It's worth noting that plants naturally age like people and are rarely perfect.

Ficus Abidjan is almost as old as the hobby - one of the original houseplants meaning it's done the test of time. Commonly known as the Rubber Plant, is a popular indoor plant cherished for its attractive glossy bronze leaves. You might be wondering where it gets the name Rubber plant from and you'll like this - it gets its name from the white sap it produces when cut, which used to be used to make rubber. If you ever trim a leaf off, this white sap comes out quite quickly.

The Ficus Abidjan has large, leathery leaves with a shiny surface. The leaves are typically burgundy in colour and very new shoots pop out looking red - it's quite eye catching. The plant can grow to be quite tall and can develop an upright, tree-like form with proper care and maintenance. It's a case of trimming off the bottom leaves and regularly trimming the upper stems to create that look.

Prefering bright, indirect ligh, it can also tolerate moderate to low light conditions (if it's not getting enough light it will drop some lower leaves). Avoid placing it in direct sunlight which will scorch the leaves. The plant prefers consistent moisture, but it's essential to allow the top couple of inches of the soil to dry out to avoid root rot. Regularly wiping the leaves with a damp cloth helps keep them clean and dust-free and it can be quite therapeutic when cleaning the leaves.

While Ficus Abidjan is generally a low-maintenance plant, it can be sensitive to changes in its environment. If your plant does begin to drop leaves - don't panic but it's just adjusting to its new environment.

Top tip: Help your Ficus Abidjan to grow quicker by regularly dusting off it's leaves with a soft, lint free cloth.
