Ceropegia woodii, commonly known as String of Hearts or Rosary Vine, is a popular trailing succulent house plant that would make a lovely addition to any indoor garden or collection of house plants. Native to South Africa, this charming plant is well-loved for its delicate and cascading vines adorned with small, heart-shaped leaves.
The foliage of Ceropegia woodii is the main attraction, with leaves that are typically green but can also have silver or purple markings, adding visual interest to the plant. The leaves are succulent, which means they store water, allowing the plant to withstand periods of drought and making it relatively low-maintenance and perfect for beginners.
One of the most striking features of Ceropegia woodii is its slender vines that can grow up to several feet long. These vines cascade gracefully, making it an ideal choice for hanging baskets, shelves, or trailing down from a high surface. As the plant grows, it develops small tubers along the stems, giving it a unique and whimsical appearance.
In addition to its attractive foliage and trailing habit, Ceropegia woodii produces delicate, tubular flowers that are typically light pink or purple in color. These small blooms have a distinctive shape resembling tiny upside-down lanterns, adding a touch of beauty and elegance to the plant.
Caring for Ceropegia woodii is very easy and this is why it's in the unkillable section of our house plants, making it a great choice for both experienced and novice plant enthusiasts. It prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some shade, making it suitable for various indoor environments. It is important to avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the delicate leaves. The plant thrives in well-draining soil, so be sure to use a potting mix specifically formulated for succulents. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, as overwatering can lead to root rot.
String of Hearts is a versatile house plant that can bring life and beauty to any space. Whether displayed in a hanging planter or allowed to trail down from a shelf, Ceropegia woodii is sure to captivate with its charming foliage and delicate flowers. With proper care, this delightful succulent will continue to grow and thrive, making it a wonderful addition to your indoor plant collection.
Please note that if there's a display pot in the picture, it's for illustation only. All plants are sent in nursery pots but we do have a range of decorative pots should you wish to pot yours up.
Important notice: The String of Hearts come coiled in the packaging to safeguard them during transportation. When you unwrap them, we advise delicately untwisting the coils and carefully separating the vines around the pot. Rushing through this process may result in losing some of the hearts, so take your time. Allow the coils to hang for a few days before gradually parting the vines (patience is key). While some loss of foliage is inevitable, these plants are known for their rapid growth and will regenerate swiftly.
