Hoya compacta ‘Mauna Loa,’ also known as the Hindu Rope Plant, is a fascinating and low-maintenance houseplant with thick, twisted, waxy leaves that cascade beautifully (when mature) from hanging baskets or pots. This unique foliage gives it a striking, almost sculptural appearance. Like other Hoyas, it’s a slow grower but rewards patience with stunning star-shaped, fragrant flowers when mature. It thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers well-draining soil to prevent root rot.
Caring for Hoya ‘Mauna Loa’ is easy, making it a great choice for both beginners and collectors. It likes to dry out between waterings, as its thick leaves store moisture, meaning it’s quite drought-tolerant. Too much water can lead to root rot, so less is more when it comes to watering. It enjoys warm temperatures and moderate humidity but can adapt well to typical indoor conditions. Fertilising during the growing season can encourage flowering, though Hoyas tend to bloom best when slightly root-bound. With the right care, this plant will thrive and may even surprise you with clusters of beautiful, sweet-scented blooms!
