Easier than you think...
Life can be full of complications can't it {{ first_name|default:"" }}. I mean we literally have a choice for everything in life and the older I get, the more I realise choice adds to complications and often indecision.
So I'm here to make life easier for you. More straight forward.
If you've ever walked down the compost isle of any garden centre you'll see pallets of different types of composts and it's very confusing.
I've always just used one type of compost.
Multi purpose compost.
And there's two things I look for on the packaging:
- peat free
- soil based
It has to be peat free because of the environmental damage harvesting peat causes and it has to be soil based for mineral content. But with the myriad of compost available, many manufacturers bamboozle you with specialities of each specific soil - you don't need that. Remember - keep it simple.
Growing medias that are predominantly compost based use lots of plant fibres. These are great but you'll know if you have them in your pots because if they dry out, they're a devil to rehydrate.
Soil based media don't suffer from that and rehydrate very nicely. They're also loaded with nutrients and minerals. So finding a media that contains both is the sweetspot. Some plant material for retaining water and some some soil which delivers the minerals your houseplants need.
Of course some houseplants like well drained soils so what happens then? Simple, you just mix some horticulture grit in with that to allow for better drainage. The more drainage a plant wants, the more grit you mix with your growing media. In contrast if you have houseplants like Ferns that appreciate moist soil, you don't need any grit.
I hope this has been helpful in your plant journey, and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Happy planting! 🌱
