How to care for a ZZ plant

ZZ plants are a popular choice for houseplants because they are easy to care for and can thrive in low-light conditions. At the time of writing, Zz Plants are in the top 5 most popular plants in the UK! So there's plenty of reasons to choose them . But before you do, here's some other information you may find useful.

ZZ plants are drought-tolerant and can go for long periods of time without water. They're able to store water in their 'trunks' and when they do need a drink it's very obvious - the plant looks droopy.  Avoid it getting to this stage by watering a bit more regularly especially if it's hot outside.

ZZ plants do not need to be fertilized often. In the growing months, it's benficial to them but not necessary in colder times.

ZZ plants do not need to be repotted often - you'll probably notice this when buying them - their normally VERY full pots. When repotting though, choose a pot that is only one size larger than the current pot. When I say one size, the easiest way to work this out is a fingers width bigger. Not much to you, but it's a lot to a plant.

ZZ plants can be propagated from stem cuttings. To do this, cut a 4-6 inch stem cutting from a healthy plant and let it sit in water for a few days until roots form. Once roots have formed, plant the cutting in a pot of well-draining potting mix. However, your plant could look a bit odd when propagating so only do this if it really needs it.

ZZ plants are easy-care houseplants that can add a touch of greenery to any home. With proper care, they can thrive for many years.

Here are a few bonus tips for caring for your ZZ plant:

  • Dust the leaves regularly to keep them clean and shiny.
  • ZZ plants are resistant to pests and diseases, but they can be susceptible to mealybugs. If you see any mealybugs, isolate your plant and treat it with an insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  • ZZ plants can be propagated from stem cuttings.
